AWARDS

ASME National Magazine Award, Reporting

I joined Matter as Managing Editor in 2013, after the long-form science magazine was acquired by Medium. The following year, Medium appointed a new EIC and relaunched Matter as a general-interest publication.

Matter was many things over the course of its 5-year existence, but above all else, it was a grand experiment. Our remit was to push the boundaries of modern journalism and create a new kind of publication on Medium’s blogging platform. We had the creative freedom (and money) most publications dream about. And we used it well. We won an ASME. One of our stories was nominated for a Pulitzer. We acquired thousands of new readers. And we proved that magazines didn’t have to look and feel and sound like traditional magazines anymore. We showed the world that a magazine could exist solely on and for the internet.

Eventually, all good things come to an end—and such was true for Matter. Medium shuttered its award-winning experiment in 2016. I was lucky enough to work on this tiny, world-class experiment. Here are a few stories I worked on. Read the rest here.

FEATURE: A startup promises “what women really want.” Which is, apparently, a model-hot guy to do their bidding. A ManServant.

FEATURE: A terrifying psychological disorder makes people think they are dead.

FEATURE: The complex, modern love story of a gender-fluid couple.

DEAR OFFICER: Letters between a cop and teen analyzing America’s deeply flawed police system.

MONEY TALKS: A series about our honest, human relationship with money—how we spend it, earn it, and think about it every damn day.

LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX(ED): Five writers pen letters to their teenage selves about what they wish they had known about sex back then.

WE THE T: An issue devoted to transgender issues by transgender voices.

THE MEN ISSUE: A special series about the crisis of the modern man
